Covington, Ky. (April 9, 2018) — Gateway Community & Technical College cosmetology and massage therapy programs partnered with Paralyzed Veterans of America, Buckeye Chapter, to provide free pampering for the caretakers of disabled veterans on April 7.
Free services provided by Gateway students included manicures, pedicures, facials, haircuts, blow outs and massages. Each caregiver was given a free TIGI swag bag. Breakfast and lunch were also provided.
“It is very important for these students to learn that you have to give back,” said Terry Hanks, cosmetology instructor, Gateway Community & Technical College. “Hopefully the students will get as much out of it today as these caregivers.”
These caregivers provide daily care to honorably discharged veterans who have spinal cord injuries or disease.
“In my opinion, we don’t do enough for the caregivers. Every one of these caregivers has the responsibility to take care of our veterans,” said Sharon Moster, executive director, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Buckeye Chapter. “They are wives, sisters, and daughters, and are unpaid. They live their lives caring for our veterans.”
During this event, a Gold Star mom was honored. A Gold Star represents family members of those killed in service to the nation.
“I’m here today because I went back to school. My life turned upside down since my son’s death,” said Linda Wright-Dennis, Gold Star Mom. “I feel like I have something to add and I need to do something.” Wright-Dennis is a volunteer for the new Kentucky-Indiana Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
The Paralyzed Veterans of America, Buckeye Chapter is one of 32 chapters around the United States. This chapter was formed in 1972 and represents the state of Ohio. Their mission strives to improve the quality of life of honorably discharged veterans who have spinal cord injury, dysfunction or illness through advocacy, medical research, sports and recreation, education and communication.
